Short answer: there is no bad month to ride in Guanacaste — this is one of the driest, sunniest regions of Costa Rica, and our tours run year-round on the same route. The real question is which version of the trail you want: the fast, golden, dusty one (December–April) or the green, muddy, rivers-running-full one (May–November). Here's the honest month-by-month breakdown.

Dry season (December–April): fast trails and open views

This is Guanacaste's classic postcard: near-guaranteed sunshine, firm fast trails, hills turning gold and views that stretch for miles because the foliage thins out. Rivers drop to shallow, easy crossings. It's also peak tourist season — flights are fuller, hotels pricier and tour slots go quickly, especially around Christmas, New Year's and Easter week.

Ride-wise, expect dust (sunglasses or goggles all the time, and the $10 bandana add-on earns its keep), warm afternoons and spectacular sunsets on the late departure. December and January are the freshest months; March and April are the hottest.

Green season (May–November): full rivers and lush jungle

The landscape flips: everything turns a deep tropical green, waterfalls and rivers run full, the dust disappears and the river crossings become the star of the show. Fewer tourists mean easier booking, quieter trails and often better hotel rates. Wildlife is more active too.

The rhythm of rain here is friendly to morning plans: most days start sunny, with showers building in the late afternoon. Tours run daily — we simply read the morning's weather and adapt. September and October bring the most rain (and the greenest green); May, June and November are lovely shoulder months many regulars consider the sweet spot.

What happens if it rains on my tour?

Nine times out of ten: you ride, you get a little wet, and it becomes the best part of the story. Costa Rican rain rarely lasts all day, and a warm-rain jungle ride is genuinely fun. We don't cancel for a shower — only for conditions our guides judge unsafe, like flooded crossings or storms.

If we do have to cancel, you choose: full refund or a free reschedule to another slot. And cancellation on your side is free up to 24 hours before the tour, so booking ahead carries no weather risk.

What's the best time of day to ride?

We run three departures: 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The 8:00 AM is our insider pick — coolest temperatures, most active wildlife, soft light for photos, and in the green season it beats the afternoon showers by hours. The 2:00 PM departure is the sunset-chaser's choice in the dry season, when golden hour sets the dust glowing.

The 11:00 AM slot is the practical middle: sleep in, ride, and still make a late lunch. If you need a different time entirely, message us — the schedule is flexible when we can make it work.

When should I book ahead?

Dry season, and especially the holiday weeks (mid-December through early January, and Easter week), book several days to a couple of weeks ahead — groups are bigger and slots fill. The rest of the year, a day or two of notice is usually plenty, and same-day requests often work out; just write us on WhatsApp.
